See the input for this meeting here in this post.

  1. Talked about my invitation-text for the meeting with new media teachers. Most important change is that I ask them for help and I don’t offer help.
  2. With respect to my concepts code tree:
    1. This is going ok; keep in mind to distinguish what I think and what others think.
    2. There are two connections possible to develop from:
      1. Something which is well known/described already and can be brought further.
      2. Something which is not described and can be brought further.
    3. I remarked that it can also be both (see also this post):
      1. Neighborhood storytelling is described and researched rigorously with respect to the real life part of it, but not with respect to the on-line part (new media or social media) of it.
      2. Social media is described rigorously, but not with respect to local story websites.
      3. So these two lines fall under the definition of something well known, but they cross each other in an unknown area.
      4. Interestingly in social media most users are also participants (Facebook) and one can infer that in new media (Wikipedia) most users are consumers, according to the definitions I found on Wikipedia (see this post).
  3. The main explicit and implicit questions for my article are in my working document. Also the aims that I have with it for my PhD-project.
  4. It is a bit tricky to both add information to my working document and on my blog (and in my outline), maybe I should just use my blog and consider it to be my working document. The chronology and titles become more important then, so I will start to put comprehensive titles and dates in the title field of the posts, in order to have a good overview from the index of the printed Feedfabrik-pdfs.
  5. I should remember that there are a view ways to look at this phenomenon: that can be the paragraphs in my article/ chapter.

To do:

  1. Finalize invitation; send to Judith for check.
  2. Start organizing the meeting; invite people informally.
  3. Discuss with Elke and Judith what to do about the co-promotorship.
  4. Go on with the literature!
  5. Share refworks with Judith.

Below the things I have done the last three weeks:

  1. Wrote a summary of the last meeting with Judith with ‘to do’s’. Most of them are touched upon below.
  2. Meeting new media teachers:
    1. Meeting of new media teachers: made a short text that can introduce the meeting, also made a list of invitees.
  3. Wrt first article:
    1. Had a look with Warnar at the hierarchical clustering method in SPSS for my first article. Executed some tests, but have to look further whether this is worthwile.
    2. I still have to make a plan about the changes in the approach and scope that I have to make to the first article.
  4. With respect to theoretical framework (second article / chapter):
    1. Continued my working document getting the core argumentations out of the list of articles (not to be discussed completely! Parts of it are referred to below).
    2. Enlarged the list of relevant articles by these steps.
    3. The text belonging to the remarks below can be found here in this post:
      1. Came to some idea’s of the levels of claims on which reference is made to concepts and theories, grounded in either theorizing, empirical findings or intuition.
      2. Came to a first feeling – based on the close reading summaries – of where the niche is in the existing literature.
      3. Came to a possible model to analyze the literature with systematically, which is further discussed here in this post (point 7).
    4. Made a second version of the outline for the second article. Here is the first and old description of the next article/ chapter.
  5. With respect to the notes about what social problem, question or task on-line collections of local memories might be an answer for, I made these posts for this work in progress.
  6. Haven’t started a diary yet more then the reflections that can be found in this category. But they are not private.
  7. Had a quick look at social media analytics. Registered at the IBM conference but didn’t get a confirmation. Have to look at the powerpoint I received.

Discussed the following with Judith:

  1. To do in 2012 (voortgangbewaking)
    1. (Below is depending on the decision on whether Judith can fulfill the role of co-promotor)
    2. Next to the appointments with Liesbet, I will also make appointments with Judith to discuss the growing theoretical framework for my dissertation.
    3. With milestones (a full draft) we might decide to meet up with all of us (Joke, Judith and Liesbet).
    4. I will arrange a meeting (April) with new media lecturers from the domain of Social Work to start building a perspective on the relevance of my research for the professional field. Based on that I will decide whether a second meeting in the autumn is useful.
      1. In that meeting the central question will be: “What value do you see in this field for the professions you are educating for”?
      2. To make that possible, I will show what the field of local on-line memories is made of based on my first concept article.
      3. Judith can be the host for that day.
  2. With respect to the first description of the next article/ chapter we discussed the following:
    1. Next to the outline for the article: start a working document, not a research report (that is not the right term).
    2. Also start a diary for miscellaneous notes.
    3. Plan half an hour twice a week for making notes on what social problem, question or task on-line collections of local memories might be an answer. From the top of my head.
  3. With respect to the first article that I reviewed again (here is the old summary):
    1. I should get the core argumentations/ propositions out and that will have references to concepts, theories and models (grounded in either theorizing, empirical findings or intuition).
    2. The article seems to do claims on the level of the image of the neighborhood, the local community and the individual.

  1. The literature study (article/chapter):
    1. Summary discussion 22nd December (overall description article + approach).
    2. Code the theoretical concepts introduced in the 15  articles on concrete cases.
    3. Cluster these concepts (cultural citizenship, community development, new literacies, etc. possibly in middle range and grand theories).
    4. Try to make a distinction between ‘what processes are happening’ (e.g. building community memory) and ‘how to look at its value for society’ (e.g. building a stronger community).
    5. Make an outline V1: 8.000 words for the article using these clusters.
    6. Make an outline for a research report (a longer more chronological, detailed and rough version of the outline).
    7. Make a planning for each cluster of concepts in the outline.
    8. –> appointment Liesbet, discuss progress and results.
    9. Make an appointment for each cluster with Liesbet towards summer.
    10. Write paragraphs for each cluster.
  2. Towards end first article, also a planning:
    1. Add the found new cases to the dataset.
    2. Retest the whole (and parts) with the hierarchical cluster analysis (together with Warnar).
    3. Discuss new results and implications for article and PhD-project with Liesbet.
    4. –> Appointment Liesbet, discuss progress and results.
    5. Decide which journal to submit first attempt.
    6. Make adjustments to article.
    7. Make a planning for the above.

Wrt draft article:

  1. Introduction
    1. Nothing changed.
  2. Literature review
    1. Matrix out; simplified the text: ok.
    2. A loose definition of ‘story’.
  3. Research question
    1. Not ok yet:
      1. What can be learned?
      2. By whom?
      3. We revise the research question when the results of the analysis are emerging.
      4. But some attempts here:
        1. Maybe: How is the design of an initiative consistently configured?
        2. Or: How are the organizational dimensions of an initiative consistently aligned?
  4. Research methods
    1. Leave the embedded collections out for now, but mention them.
    2. Check cluster analysis.
    3. Check term ‘categorial variable’ (= wrong; should be categorical).
    4. Maybe use interval variables for affordances and formats.
    5. W.r.t. internal validity:
      1. Politics of the interpretation?
      2. Building on existing literature.
      3. Peered debriefing (Liesbet and Ben).
      4. Bens role in finding and selecting cases and analyzing them.
      5. Outliers.
  5. Results of analysis
    1. Matrix will come here.

Wrt body of knowledge related to this post:

  1. Sociology: social cohesion
    1. Social psychology: “unlearning feelings of uncertainty or anxiety” from this post.
  2. Urban Studies: meaning for neighborhoods.
  3. Media Studies: media for participation.
  4. History: participatory public history or DIY history

Other stuff

  1. Notes on the meeting of July the first.
  2. Made some notes on the distinction between memories and stories. And genres of stories.
  3. Notes on the talk I had with Judith Metz.
  4. Reflection: Facilitate the data to speak for itself.
  5. Played with MaxQDA with the ‘turn into a categorial variable’ and ‘turn into a variable’ on code-level; that resulted in these excel-formats.
  6. On these formats I can do statistics with SPSS; I tried correspondence analysis in SPSS 18 on a sample file; that worked, but I have to look at what I really want to know and then translate that into the right method.
  7. Submitted a proposal for DISH 2011, bases on my introduction for the theme co-creation and crowd sourcing.
  8. Made a post on hartvooramsterdammuseum.
  9. Wrote a draft ‘Grootstedelijk burgerschap – digitaal’ together with Joke.

To do

  1. Wrt analysis:
    1. Finish re-coding first 60 cases,
    2. Run analysis,
    3. Choose and code next 10 and return to 2, untill satisfied.
  2. Update my literature in refworks [to do] check jeroen.
  3. Set up a meeting according to this posts keeping me close to practice and education, but also as a start of cultural / social dynamics.
  4. Made notes on the last meeting on academic writing [to do].

Article

  1. Wrote some notes on last meeting.
  2. Literature review
    1. Rewrote the first part of the literature review, but got stuck a little loosing myself in details further on, but I think I have found the solution in a matrix at the beginning of this section.
    2. Had a discussion with Susanne and Nuria about the first part which yielded these remarks.
  3. Rsearch question
  4. Research methods
    1. I wrote a argument for not collecting more, but to do a theoretical sampling (doelgerichte selectie). See this post.
    2. I met the principles of correspondence analysis, which I could use, see this post.
  5. Results of analysis
    1. Selected the exemplary cases from my collection of cases and put them in MaxQDA (the not local ones were excluded): 78 in total. Ben is up number 60 now.
    2. Some insights based on the discussions with Ben about analyzing (coding) the cases.

Other stuff

  1. Had a PhD-lab on the 29-th with Herman Meininger as referent for Paulina’s plans for her first article and ten we discussed the first 400 words of each others articles, made some small notes on paper, but see also this post.
  2. Went to a meeting of the Amsterdam Museum about starting a community of people who are gathering stories about Amsterdam: onsamsterdammuseum. Promised to add two posts to this group.
  3. Submitted a proposal for DISH 2011, bases on my introduction for the theme co-creation and crowd sourcing.
  4. Had a talk with Judith Metz; notes here [to do].
  5. For more cases, there are the following leads:
    1. Search on ‘telling local stories‘.
    2. Search on ‘asociacion de vecinos (barrio x)‘ (neighborhood association in the neighborhood x).
    3. Check my (emic/ etic) remarks in this post.
  6. We had a PhD-lab academic writing; notes here [to do].
